Best Kid-Friendly Activities

Fall/Winter

  • Get crafty: Make candles at Waxen Moon, Squaw Valley; paint your own pottery or make mosaics at Painted Rock, Tahoe City; take a scrapbook class at Paper Paradise, Truckee.
  • Get snowy: Go snow tubing or sledding, have a snowball fight, make a snowperson and/or snow angels.
  • Take a ride up a mountain: The Heavenly gondola and Squaw Valley tram run both winter and summer.
  • Go ice-skating: The South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena and Squaw Valley High Camp rink operate both winter and summer; or hit the seasonal rinks at Truckee River Regional Park, Heavenly Village, Northstar-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood.
  • Horse around: Before the snow falls, go horseback riding at Alpine Meadows Stables, Squaw Valley or Zephyr Cove. During winter, climb aboard a horsedrawn sleigh at Stateline, South Shore, Kirkwood Meadows or the Resort at Squaw Creek.

Spring/Summer

  • Hike: To Cascade Falls (South Shore) or Shirley Canyon (North Shore).
  • Play a round of mini golf: There are courses in Kings Beach, Carnelian Bay and in South Shore at Magic Carpet and Heavenly Village.
  • Rent bicycles: Pick them up at Camp Richardson, Tahoe City or Homewood and take a cruise along the beautiful bike trails nearby.
  • Go to an outdoor movie night: Weekly summer shows can be found in Squaw Valley, Northstar-at-Tahoe or Tahoe City, or attend Wednesday night concerts at the Truckee Amphitheater.
  • Get on the water: Rent rafts and fl oat the Truckee, or rent kayaks at one of numerous places around The Lake.
  • Play on the beach: Hit one of Tahoe’s beautiful sand beaches (Sand Harbor, Tahoe Vista, Meeks Bay and all along the South Shore) or the beachfront playground at Tahoe City’s Commons Beach.
  • Join the circus: Learn the fl ying trapeze with Trapeze Arts at The Village at Squaw Valley.
  • Take a cruise: The Tahoe Queen has a Family Fun Cruise hosted by The Lake’s own sea monster, Tahoe Tessie, or go for a paddle wheel boat ride aboard the MS Dixie II.
  • Get fishy: Visit the Taylor Creek stream profile chamber or go to the Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake, where you’re guaranteed to catch a fish.
